For my EDGE project, I have been researching and building a portfolio in Surface Pattern Design. I have always been interested in pattern design, and I am excited for the experience I’ve gained thus far and to continue doing so. My project involved research into the field, how to create patterns in Adobe Illustrator and trending patterns in the market today. I have compiled a portfolio of 12 patterns in a variety of styles and color palates in order to learn new techniques and showcase my abilities to potential employers and clients.
These designs could be used for anything from textiles, social media, stationary or any number of other products. I am currently employed at a clothing company that is looking into the possibility of purchasing exclusive pattern designs for textiles within the next few years. I would love to be able to sell my work to this company, however, I will also look into other companies in the market where I could potentially make a profit from my designs in the future.
I was inspired to do this project by the company I work for. I was informed that they were looking into purchasing surface patterns to use on women’s clothing. I decided to do some research and build a portfolio to potentially sell to them one day when they are able to start purchasing designs. Inspiration for my designs comes mostly from local plant life. The pattern shown below, however, was inspired by my trip to Honduras last winter.

I had a bit of a struggle getting used to the program. I took several online courses to help me learn how to use Adobe Illustrator to create patterns. All-in-all, it wasn’t too difficult to learn, though, and I’ve really enjoyed it since getting used to it. Now I have the issue of organizing my reference and inspiration photos. I have hundreds on my phone that I have ideas for patterns of.
One way I benefitted someone else with my project, is I created a pattern based off one of my sister’s drawings. She is currently taking an art class at her high school and tends to be self conscious of her work. I asked her permission to use her design in a pattern and she agreed. I think it helped her to see the value in her work when I was willing and excited to use her design. (image below)
This project has helped me immensely! Going into this project, I thought it would be something worth trying for a little while. I didn’t expect I would love creating patterns as much as I would. I now feel this is something want to pursue as a career. I’ve continued to do research into jobs and ways I could freelance design patterns to support myself in the future.
