Blank Page: Welcome

For my EDGE project, I have been researching and building a portfolio in Surface Pattern Design. I have always been interested in pattern design, and I am excited for the experience I’ve gained thus far and to continue doing so. My project involved research into the field, how to create patterns in Adobe Illustrator and trending patterns in the market today. I have compiled a portfolio of 12+ patterns in a variety of styles and color palates in order to learn new techniques and showcase my abilities to potential employers and clients. These designs could be used for anything from textiles, social media, stationary or any number of other products. I am currently employed at a clothing company that is looking into the possibility of purchasing exclusive pattern designs for textiles within the next few years. I would love to be able to sell my work to this company, however, I will also look into other companies in the market where I could potentially make a profit from my designs in the future.

GOALS & OUTCOMES

I had two main goals in accomplishing this project. The first was to create a professional portfolio to showcase for potential employers. The second was to gain understanding on how to navigate and find success in the field as a surface pattern designer.

In order to meet these outcomes, I took a few online classes and resources.  One of the websites that helped me the most was Skillshare.  They have professionally done video courses for a wide variety of subjects but specifically, they helped me learn the functions and tools in Adobe Illustrator that are needed  to build a successful repeating pattern, as well as inspiration and resource gathering and organization, which I have come to find out is a key part of building a cohesive collection.

I feel that I have accomplished these goals.  Not only have I learned the process and tools necessary to create a surface pattern, but I have also starting using it to market myself professionally.  I have come to understand the tools in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop necessary to build professional patterns and find that I really enjoy doing so.
